The “culinary mysteries” have been very popular – national best-sellers all -- from the beginning. I have enjoyed reading them all, starting with Catering to Nobody in 1990. As the series started, Goldy Bear had just split with her abusive ex-husband, Dr. John Richard Korman (also known as "The Jerk”) and is trying to find a way to support herself and her 11-year-old son Arch. Her solution: Goldilocks Catering ("Where Everything Is Just Right!") in the fictional Aspen Meadows, Colorado. Catering is a great job for cozy heroine, putting her in interesting situations with endless possibilities for supporting characters. The series’ regular cast now includes Tom Schulz, a homicide detective who became Goldy’s husband in book four; Marla Korman, another of The Jerk’s ex-wives and Goldy’s best friend; and Julian Teller, a young man Goldy befriends and who becomes her assistant, then a culinary student. Today, many cozy mysteries center on food and include recipes, but Diane Mott Davidson blazed that trail. Although most of the recipes are beyond my capability, more adventurous cooks and bakers will love them – just reading the recipes can make my mouth water.
